The TransFlash cards, also called as TF cards were introduced by SanDisk Corporation in the year 2004 as the world’s smallest memory cards, almost equivalent to the size of a fingernail. These were solely made to fit into the mobile phones as a means of secondary/external storage space.
Many users confuse these with the SD cards which are otherwise different from traditional TF cards. Why are these TF cards used?

Are TF and microSD the same thing?
Yes, these two cards are same but they have a lot of technological differences. Both types of cards are compatible with each other. Moreover, the microSD bears exactly the same dimensions as that of TF cards and serves the same function of providing an external storage to the device.
What are the differences between a microSD and a TF card?
Difference 1: Dimensions are different
SD card’s dimensions: 24mm x 32mm x 2.1mm
TF card’s dimensions: 15mm x 11mm x 1mm
Difference 2: Designations vary
A TF card is one of the memory card known as Micro SD but the name was thereafter changed to TransFlash. This happened because the SD franchise was then purchased by SDA institution along with miniSD and the SD card. SD stands for Secure Digital, so these cards are known as Secure Digital Memory cards in common.
Difference3: On the basis of Origin
An SD card is an upgraded memory card which is based on the semiconductor flash memory device.
TransFlash, on the other hand, is a tiny flash memory storage card which relies upon NAND MLC and other controlling technologies from SanDisk. This creates a very fine line between the two.
Difference 4: Establishing Connections
An SD card can be inserted into systems via an adapter but the TF cards are transmitted into the MiniSD.
Difference 5: Non-memory functions
MicroSD cards can perform non-memory functions like Bluetooth, Near Field Communication, GPS, etc. but the TransFlash cards are unable to do all this.
Also, you’ll find a security section switch on SD cards but not on TF cards. The variants in the two categories are like as:
SD cards: 128Mb, 256Mb, 512Mb, 1Gb, 2Gb, 4Gb, 6Gb, 8Gb, 16Gb and 32gb.
TF Cards: 128Mb, 256mb, 512mb, 1Gb, 2Gb, 4Gb, 6Gb, 8Gb, 16Gb, 32Gb and 64Gb.
Difference 6: Functionality
SD cards have their application in portable pieces of equipment like Digital cameras, media player, etc.
TransFlash cards, on the other hand, are used for mobile phones only. It applies to the devices for GPS, media player and other Flash memory drive functionality.
How TransFlash got changed into SDcard?
SD card Association in 2005 adopted the TransFlash after which the TF cards started being known as the microSD cards.
